Khamenei insists that his strategy for the destruction of Israel is not based on anti-Semitism which he describes as a European phenomenon. His position is instead based on “well-established Islamic principles.”

Khamenei explains that he is not recommending “classic warfare” to wipe Israel off the map or to “massacre the Jews.” He recommends a low-intensity war of attrition over a long period of time designed to make life unpleasant if not intolerable for a majority of Israeli Jews so that they leave the country. He suggested a similar course of action in a series of tweets last November. Khamenei makes no reference to Iran’s nuclear program but the subtext according to the Post is that a nuclear-armed Iran would make Israel think twice before taking military action against the Islamic Republic.

Khamenei hopes that over time the world will succumb to “Israel fatigue” and no longer support the Jewish state.
The next stage would be the establishment of a state of “Palestine” that would be under Muslim rule but allow non-Muslims including some Israeli Jews who could prove “genuine roots” in the region to remain as “protected minorities.”
Under Khamenei’s scheme a referendum would be held about the nature of the state. All alleged Palestinians refugees and their descendants supposedly spread out across the globe would be able to vote while Jews “who have come from other places” would be excluded. He is sure of a Palestinian majority.

Khamenei describes Israel as “a cancerous tumor.” With its elimination “the West’s hegemony and threats will be discredited” in the Middle East. In its place he continues “the hegemony of Iran will be promoted.” There is nothing new in the ideas Khamenei presents here. He has voiced them all in the past. The worrying element here is that he promotes them consistently and seriously. This is not mere rhetoric but rather a state plan.

Ashdod SC players said they feared for their lives after being forced to run for cover from local fans in Bulgaria during Monday's so-called friendly match against CSKA Sofia. Ashdod which was relegated from the Premier League to the National League last season is preparing for the new campaign in Bulgaria and arranged several games against local sides in order to build up match fitness. However while most pre-season matches are usually quickly forgotten Monday's game against CSKA is bound to live long in the memory of Ashdod players who were forced to flee the stadium after dozens of Sofia fans assaulted them kicking and punching players while also throwing bottles at the team and its staff. Tempers flared early in the encounter but matters got completely out of hand in second-half stoppage time when Ashdod's Niv Zrihen was sent off for a rough foul on a Sofia player.

The CSKA players immediately confronted the Ashdod players and soon afterwards dozens of supporters burst onto the pitch and attacked the stunned Israelis. The Ashdod players and staff raced up an empty stand at the other end of the stadium seeking cover and were eventually escorted back to their hotel by local police forces. Ashdod's players and coaches were lucky to escape with bruises with coach Eyal Lachman being hit in the face by a glass bottle. Deputy Defense Minister Eli Ben Dahan said he expects “all those who condemned the terror events over the weekend to condemn the attack that took place this evening which injured two people and miraculously did not lead to deaths.”
“There is no Jewish terror or Arab terror there is just terror — and it kills,” Dahan asserted. He was referring to the widespread condemnation voiced by Israel’s leadership and protests across the country in the wake of the death of a Palestinian baby when his house caught fire. Security forces suspect that Jewish terrorists ignited the flames.
Member of Knesset (MK) Tzipi Livni called for harsh action against the terrorists. “Facing terrorism rock throwings and Molotov cocktails it is now up to security forces to wield a heavy fist to find and punish these criminals and thwart any future attacks,” she said on Tuesday.
In a separate incident Palestinian terrorists threw several firebombs at an Israeli bus in the Hebron area on Monday. They missed their target.

La furia di Boko Haram è tornata ad abbattersi sul nord-est della Nigeria in due distinti raid in altrettanti villaggi i terroristici islamici hanno provocato la morte di settantaquattro persone. E «la chiusura definitiva di questa realtà provocherà ulteriori drammi nel tessuto sociale della zona» confermano il presidente della Camera di commercio di Firenze Vasco Galgani il sindaco di Castelfiorentino Giovanni Occhipinti e il responsabile dell'ufficio pastorale sociale e del lavoro dell'arcidiocesi fiorentina don Giovanni Momigli. «Oggi con Papa Francesco ci sentiamo meno soli e torniamo a casa con più coraggio per combattere per il futuro delle nostre famiglie» dicono i rappresentanti degli operai che per questa ragione sono «venuti dal Papa soprattutto con tutti i nostri bambini». La vicenda di Giovanni Palatucci che solo negli anni Ottanta era quasi sconosciuta in Italia è negli ultimi dieci anni divenuta nota non solo agli specialisti ma ad un largo pubblico grazie alle associazioni che sono nate a perpetuarne la memoria agli scritti che si sono moltiplicati intorno alla sua figura allo sceneggiato televisivo a lui dedicato e più in generale all'interesse suscitato dalla riscoperta dell'opera dei salvatori dei Giusti. Tutto ciò in corrispondenza da una parte dell'apertura nel 2002 del processo di beatificazione di Palatucci dall'altra dell'opera di divulgazione della sua immagine intrapresa dalla Polizia di Stato italiana di cui Palatucci era stato funzionario. Un forte impulso alla conoscenza della sua figura è venuto anche dall'apertura nel 2008 a Campagna in provincia di Salerno di un Museo "Itinerario della memoria e della pace" nel convento di San Bartolomeo il luogo che fra il 1940 e il 1943 ospitò un campo di internamento per ebrei stranieri e dove Giovanni Palatucci riuscì a far inviare numerosi ebrei da Fiume fidando sulla rete di protezione creata dallo zio Giovanni Maria Palatucci all'epoca vescovo di Campagna. Un percorso della memoria a scoppio ritardato potremmo dire come tanti altri che riguardano questi anni drammatici della nostra storia che vale forse la pena di ripercorrere insieme a meglio comprenderne il formarsi e il consolidarsi. In realtà è fin dagli anni del dopoguerra che il ruolo del giovane questore di Fiume nell'opera di salvataggio degli ebrei a Fiume fu messa in evidenza da molti degli ebrei da lui aiutati a scampare alla deportazione. Le prime testimonianze appartengono ai primi anni Cinquanta testimonianze che trovate in questo libro come quella dell'ebrea croata Olga Hamburger fuggita nel 1941 da Zagabria a cui Palatucci consentì di rimanere a Fiume fino al 1942 e che poi fu trasferita a Modena come internata libera o come quella delle sorelle Ferber che anch'esse con i loro famigliari riuscirono a restare a Fiume fino al 1942 e poi inviate a Sarnico sul lago d'Iseo sempre in internamento libero e molte altre analoghe. Dall'azione spontanea dei sopravvissuti ai riconoscimenti ufficiali delle istituzioni ebraiche il passo non fu lungo. Nel 1953 a Ramat Gan presso Tel Aviv una strada e un parco furono dedicati al questore Palatucci; nel 1955 nel decimo anniversario della sua morte un'altra iniziativa memoriale fu realizzata in Israele la dedica di un bosco nella Foresta dei martiri a Yad Vashem. Infine il 17 aprile 1955 l'Unione delle Comunità Israelitiche gli conferiva la medaglia d'oro alla memoria "per la sua opera in favore degli ebrei e degli altri perseguitati". Iniziative di ebrei salvati uniti nella volontà di ricordare quindi che trovarono sbocco tanto nell'attività memoriale iniziata in Israele intorno a Yad Vashem quanto nel riconoscimento pubblico del mondo ebraico italiano. Sottolineo questo aspetto perché abbiamo assistito recentemente a tentativi di porre seri dubbi sull'opera di salvataggio messa in atto da Giovanni Palatucci a Fiume o perlomeno ad una sorta di revisione della sua immagine di salvatore come nel recente volume di uno studioso per altro serio e preparato come Marco Coslovich. Ma come conciliare questi dubbi con questo precoce riconoscimento degli ebrei di Fiume compiuto in un momento in cui la memoria dello sterminio degli ebrei era ancora patrimonio quasi esclusivo del mondo ebraico e in cui la società esterna viveva nella rimozione e nell'oblio tanto dello sterminio degli ebrei che degli orrori della guerra? In epoca quindi non sospetta di volere salvaguardare attraverso l'immagine di Palatucci un'immagine in chiave giustificazionista degli italiani. Sappiamo certo che l'opera di Palatucci non fu l'unica compiuta dagli italiani a proteggere gli ebrei dalla deportazione. È vero che come ricorda Coslovich tale fu tra il 1940 e il 1943 la politica del governo italiano nelle zone di occupazione in Iugoslavia e in Francia. Ma è anche vero che non mancano le testimonianze dell'aiuto portato da Palatucci agli ebrei anche dopo l'8 settembre 1943 dopo la carta di Verona del novembre che imponeva l'arresto come nemici di tutti gli ebrei italiani e stranieri ai funzionari che come Palatucci avevano aderito dopo l'8 settembre alla Repubblica di Salò. Tanto che la sua adesione al regime di Salò si configura come un vero e proprio doppio gioco in cui Palatucci salva da una parte gli ebrei che le leggi gli imporrebbero dall'altra di arrestare fino all'arresto e alla deportazione a Dachau dove il giovane questore morì di tifo il 10 febbraio 1945. Siamo nel caso di Palatucci di fronte ad un personaggio che agisce per proteggere gli ebrei non solo quando è un funzionario dello Stato fascista ma anche quando rappresenta a Fiume le istituzioni repubblicane e antisemite di Salò la cui opera attraversa trasversalmente cioè gli anni per usare un'espressione calzante di Michele Sarfatti tanto della persecuzione dei diritti che della persecuzione delle vite. Un personaggio inoltre sulla cui adesione alla Resistenza ci sono testimonianze difficili da mettere in dubbio. Uno sguardo ampio alla storia complessa della Shoah in Italia sia in rapporto al periodo tra le leggi razziste del 1938 e il 1943 sia in rapporto alla memoria mitologica dei "buoni italiani" non può che far risaltare l'opera di Palatucci come quella di una consapevole disubbidienza ad una normativa considerata ingiusta. Ma allora perché di fronte a questo riconoscimento del mondo ebraico le istituzioni italiane non soltanto tacquero bensì negarono a lungo al giovane questore morto a Dachau ogni titolo di merito alimentando anzi sospetti e dubbi sul suo operato alla questura di Fiume? Credo che si debba innanzi tutto considerare qual era il clima politico degli anni Cinquanta quale la memoria che istituzioni e organi dello Stato avevano degli anni del fascismo e di quelli ancora più terribili seguiti all'armistizio dell'8 settembre. L'idea stessa di Shoah non era ancora emersa sullo sfondo delle disastrose perdite della guerra una guerra ricordiamolo totale rivolta contro i civili tutti. La ricerca dei Giusti non era ancora nemmeno iniziata mentre l'amnistia volta a riconciliare il paese si estendeva a coprire i reati dei collaborazionisti. Poco si parlava delle leggi del 1938 la cui ferita era considerata una ferita inferta agli ebrei soli non ai principi stessi della civiltà. Quanto alla Chiesa essa era ancora ben lontana dall'affrontare il nodo che sarebbe diventato centrale soltanto dopo il Concilio Vaticano ii del ruolo dell'antigiudaismo nella persecuzione razzista e nazifascista. La tradizione di ostilità agli ebrei con il suo corollario della spinta verso la loro conversione era ancora ben viva e legittima. In quel clima generale in cui non erano poche le voci che si levavano come quella di Cesare Merzagora ad attribuire agli ebrei stessi parte della responsabilità della persecuzione che li aveva colpiti come pensare che proprio il ministero degli Interni e gli organi della polizia avrebbero levata alta la voce per esaltare un loro funzionario per la sua disubbidienza agli ordini? e questo mentre il criterio dell'ubbidienza agli ordini ricevuti veniva usato in tutti i tribunali come attenuante giuridicamente valida dei peggiori atti dei collaborazionisti e dei nazisti stessi? No non stupisce che Giovanni Palatucci si sia visto negare in quegli anni ogni riconoscimento dallo Stato italiano avrebbe semmai stupito il contrario. In quegli anni la memoria della sua opera appartenne ai soli ebrei. Più tardi molto più tardi quando ormai il clima era radicalmente cambiato la memoria dell'opera di salvataggio compiuta da Palatucci cominciò a prendere forza. Nel 1990 Yad Vashem lo riconobbe come Giusto di Israele e credo che sia qui superfluo richiamare il rigore della commissione abilitata a riconoscere questa etichetta di Giusto le ricerche d'archivio le testimonianze necessarie ad essere riconosciuto come tale. Ed è da allora che ha cominciato infine a dare i suoi frutti l'opera di paziente ricostruzione della sua vicenda e di sollecitazione del suo riconoscimento che già da molti anni veniva compiuta senza esito all'interno delle istituzioni italiane nella polizia in particolare che riconosceva infine in Palatucci in quel suo funzionario disubbidiente che salvava gli ebrei che avrebbe dovuto arrestare non un imbarazzante eccezione ma un uomo retto che obbediva alla sua coscienza e sapeva distinguere il giusto dall'ingiusto. Il 19 marzo 1995 il governo italiano gli conferiva la medaglia d'oro al merito civile. Ed intanto la Chiesa apriva il suo processo di canonizzazione ad indagare le motivazioni cristiane dei suoi atti a sottolineare la fede che ne aveva animato l'agire. Il 10 febbraio 2004 la prima fase del processo si chiudeva e Palatucci era dichiarato "venerabile". Per gli ebrei che Palatucci aveva salvato e che si muovevano negli anni Cinquanta per ritrovare le sue tracce nel marasma del dopoguerra per quanti in Israele ne riconoscevano i meriti Palatucci era stato un uomo un uomo Giusto. Non il solo certo ma uno dei Giusti. Giusti da identificare da riconoscere proprio perché solo una minoranza lo furono. Ma a ciascuno di essi proprio perché responsabile dei suoi atti proprio perché riconosciuto in quanto individuo deve spettare il riconoscimento. Non per giustificare il resto gli spettatori indifferenti i complici quelli insomma che tacquero ma per riconoscere i meriti di coloro che seppero opporsi al male e all'ingiustizia. Perché riconoscere un giusto vuol dire riconoscere anche che attorno a lui troppi non lo furono e piegarono il capo per viltà per conformismo per semplice acquiescenza. Come nel 1943 il parroco romano Giovanni Gregorini salvò cinque famiglie di ebrei. 28 gennaio 2014. La chiesa romana di San Benedetto presso il Gazometro è affollata nel pomeriggio del 26 gennaio non per la messa ma per ascoltare quanto verrà detto su don Giovanni Gregorini che di questa chiesa fu parroco dal 1942 al 1984 per oltre quarant'anni. Mi ha invitata il parroco di oggi don Fabio Bartoli a parlare insieme a monsignor Andrea Lonardo del mio libro Portico d'Ottavia 13 in cui la figura di don Gregorini emerge viva.

A parlare sono Deborah Di Veroli e Costanza Fatucci allora due bambine di dieci anni circa adesso due anziane signore ancora piene di vita. I Di Veroli e i Fatucci abitavano in via Portico d'Ottavia 13 e riuscirono a sfuggire tutti alla razzia nazista. I Di Veroli si recarono subito nella parrocchia di San Benedetto dove il padre Attilio conosceva già il parroco che lo accolse dicendogli «Entra abbiamo avuto or ora disposizione di farvi entrare». Dopo i bombardamenti della guerra la chiesa di San Benedetto venne ricostruita e don Gregorini continuò a esserne il parroco. Fu un sacerdote noto riconosciuto per i suoi meriti pastorali ma dei suoi meriti come salvatore degli ebrei braccati non sembra abbia raccontato molto. Forse gli sembrava come ad altri salvatori di aver fatto il giusto e di non doversi vantare. Ma i riconoscimenti sono importanti perché rappresentano un esempio per il resto del mondo oltre che una gratificazione per chi li riceve. Così la comunità ebraica gli dedicò una targa che è dentro la chiesa in anni non troppo lontani su sollecitazione di coloro che erano stati salvati. Ma nessuno ha finora posto il problema dell'attribuzione a questo sacerdote umano e coraggioso dell'etichetta di "Giusto delle nazioni" che pure dovrebbe essergli data. Credo che bisogni percorrere questa strada e che colui che parlava di religione con i suoi amici ebrei e confortava il dolore dei famigliari delle vittime debba avere il suo riconoscimento accanto agli altri Giusti del mondo. Mi sembra dovuto e necessario. Per lui e per coloro che ha accolto e salvato.

La libertà religiosa è molto di più che la semplice tolleranza delle differenze. È quanto in sostanza ha sottolineato il patriarca ecumenico di Costantinopoli Bartolomeo nel primo dei suoi interventi in programma nel corso della visita di tre giorni dal 28 al 30 gennaio a Parigi dove riceverà la laurea honoris causa presso l'Institut catholique. Parlando appena arrivato nella capitale transalpina all'Accademia delle scienze morali e politiche il patriarca ha pronunciato un discorso sulla libertà religiosa in occasione del diciassettesimo centenario dell'editto di Milano. Ricordando il contesto di diffusa secolarizzazione che caratterizza in particolare la società occidentale e la contemporanea e solo in apparenza contraddittoria rivalutazione del ruolo della religione nel campo antropologico spirituale culturale e sociale il patriarca ha sottolineato come quella dei "diritti umani sia verosimilmente la questione centrale posta alle religioni". Infatti "tra i diritti umani quello della libertà religiosa costituisce la più grande sfida che le religioni hanno affrontato".

Con i sacerdoti e i volontari che animano le ventotto federazioni e i centri di ascolto in tutta Italia c'erano molte persone vittime dell'usura o a rischio di cadere nelle mani degli usurai si parla di quattro milioni di famiglie in Italia. E con loro tante vittime delle estorsioni ex giocatori di azzardo e "persone che vivono sotto la tutela dello Stato lontano dalle loro famiglie perché minacciate dalla criminalità organizzata" spiega monsignor Alberto D'Urso vice presidente e segretario generale della consulta. "Al Papa abbiamo chiesto di incoraggiarci - aggiunge - soprattutto in un tempo di crisi che aggrava situazioni già difficili". E "vogliamo riaffermare che è possibile uscire dalla morsa dell'usura e liberarsi dalla dipendenza del gioco purché ci sia più prevenzione più sobrietà più solidarietà più lealtà e soprattutto un accompagnamento spirituale e pratico per chi è finito in povertà". E proprio per testimoniare "la vicinanza della Chiesa ai problemi concreti della gente" il cardinale arcivescovo di Firenze Giuseppe Betori stamani ha voluto essere accanto alla delegazione degli operai dell'azienda Shelbox di Castelfiorentino venuti a presentare al Pontefice la loro drammatica situazione. Un pericolo questo che si è casualmente manifestato in tutta la sua drammaticità con la presenza all'udienza di un gruppo di vittime degli usurai. È così sembrato quasi naturale il collegamento delle parole rivolte da Papa Francesco alle famiglie degli operai in crisi con la dura condanna dell'usura. "Quando una famiglia non ha da mangiare - ha detto il Pontefice - perché deve pagare il mutuo agli usurai" ci troviamo dinanzi a qualcosa che "non è cristiano non è umano!" ma che è piuttosto "una drammatica piaga sociale che ferisce la dignità inviolabile della persona umana". Poco prima il Santo Padre aveva sviluppato una riflessione sul sacramento della confermazione. Un sacramento ha detto al quale forse si dà poca importanza. Invece "è tanto importante nella vita cristiana" perchè "ci dà la forza per andare avanti" ha ribadito. Con la cresima unita al battesimo e all'Eucaristia ha spiegato si completa quell'unico evento salvifico "che si chiama "iniziazione cristiana"" attraverso il quale "diventiamo nuove creature e membra della Chiesa". Un evento al quale non è estranea la presenza dello Spirito Santo e dei suoi doni. E a questo proposito Papa Francesco ha annunciato che proprio ai sette doni dello Spirito Santo dedicherà le riflessioni proposte durante le udienze generali non appena concluderà quelle dedicate ai sacramenti.

Operazione di salvataggio. di Giovanni Preziosi. L'Istituto delle Suore di S. Giuseppe di Chambéry in via del Casaletto A cavallo tra la fine del 1943 e l'inizio del 1944 Roma era ormai saldamente nelle mani delle forze d'occupazione tedesche che subito si resero protagoniste di rastrellamenti ai danni degli ebrei. Leontina Segre e la direttrice della scuola ebraica «Vittorio Polacco» Elena Ravenna persuase che la loro sorte fosse ormai segnata e notando che molti conventi avevano spalancato le loro porte per accogliere quanti erano braccati dai nazi-fascisti all'indomani dell'armistizio decisero di rivolgersi alle suore di San Giuseppe di Chambéry per chiedere di nascondere i loro figli e nipoti all'interno del loro istituto in via del Casaletto. Sr. Emerenziana Bolledi. «Infatti in quei terribili giorni il Santo Padre Pio XII — scrive sul filo della memoria suor Ferdinanda — aveva chiesto a tutte le comunità religiose di Roma di aprire le porte a questi fratelli perseguitati. Le nostre superiore accolsero quelli che si presentavano». Le principali artefici di questa operazione di salvataggio furono l'allora novizia suor Emerenziana Bolledi e la direttrice della scuola suor Ferdinanda Corsetti entrambe per quanto fatto in quegli anni nel 1997 sono state riconosciute dallo Yad Vashem Giuste tra le Nazioni. Il pericolo di improvvise ispezioni naziste era sempre in agguato considerato che proprio a poca distanza all'interno di Villa Coen i tedeschi avevano allestito una base di mezzi corazzati. Spesso approfittando della vicinanza alcuni militari facevano visita alle suore e qualcuno come un capitano di nome Sigmund s'intratteneva persino a suonare l'armonium in chiesa gettando nel panico i rifugiati che si nascondevano nelle aule del primo piano trasformate per l'occasione in alloggi di fortuna. Questo si ripeteva ogni qual volta dal centro di Roma giungeva la telefonata di suor Anna Maria con la parola d'ordine «i fratelli di suor Guglielmina si trovano vicino a noi»; a quel punto immediatamente la portinaia suor Anastasia Palombi era costretta ad adottare speciali misure di sicurezza perché nei dintorni dell'istituto si aggiravano delle pattuglie tedesche. A un segno convenzionale gli uomini correvano a nascondersi nel canneto mentre le donne si travestivano da suore fingendosi a letto malate oppure «addette ai lavori di cucina dell'orto vestite con grembiule e fazzoletto intorno alla testa». Alle bambine ebree invece le suore avevano consegnato i documenti di alcune alunne meridionali che ancora non erano rientrate nella capitale in modo tale che potessero frequentare la scuola senza il timore che potessero essere riconosciute. Una sera si presentarono all'uscio dell'istituto due ufficiali armati che dissero a suor Clotilde e a suor Ferdinanda di aver visto ebrei all'interno del convento. Prese alla sprovvista le suore senza opporre resistenza li accompagnarono a ispezionare i locali badando di non farli accedere ai piani superiori dov'erano nascosti gli ebrei non avevano infatti avuto il tempo di avvisarli della visita improvvisa. L'angoscia delle suore aumentò allorché i due militari furono sul punto di salire al piano superiore; tuttavia dopo qualche istante di esitazione andarono via. Card. Vicario Francesco Marchetti Selvaggiani Ai principi di novembre due militari tedeschi chiesero di requisire l'intera casa per alloggiarvi i loro commilitoni malati. «Giunsero in macchina — scrive la madre superiora — e si fermarono davanti all'Istituto parlando fra loro e consultando una carta topografica. Intanto tornavano a casa due delle sfollate ricoverate all'orfanotrofio; furono fermate dai tedeschi che domandarono loro di chi fosse quel fabbricato. Risposero che era delle suore di San Giuseppe alla dipendenza della Santa Sede. (...) Domandarono allora quale fosse la via per andare al Vaticano il che ci fa supporre rileva la religiosa che volessero domandare il permesso di requisire la casa o di perquisirla». Per scongiurare il pericolo la superiora provinciale suor Giacinta Salustri-Galli tramite il cardinale vicario di Roma Francesco Marchetti Selvaggiani il 5 dicembre 1943 decise di rivolgersi direttamente alla Segreteria di Stato della Santa Sede per chiedere consiglio al cardinale Maglione perché la responsabilità era grande «data la qualità e la quantità delle persone ricoverate nell'Istituto» e a quel punto bisognava usare tutta la possibile prudenza. Padre Pancrazio Pfeiffer Per sbrogliare l'intricata vicenda fu incaricato il superiore generale dei salvatoriani padre Pancrazio Pfeiffer al quale fu raccomandato di «fare i possibili passi per scongiurare il temuto provvedimento» sfruttando le conoscenze che aveva nelle alte sfere del comando militare tedesco. Evidentemente tutto andò a buon fine considerato che nel breve volgere di qualche settimana il 25 dicembre monsignor Montini scriveva a suor Giacinta per rassicurarla che la Segreteria di Stato si era già attivata per «rendere meno precaria la tranquillità del benemerito Istituto».
